The fort Saint-Jean is one of the oldest and most emblematic monuments in Marseille standing as a symbol of the the long maritime and military history of the city. Occupying a strategic position at the entrance to the Old Port the site has been fortified since antiquity but the present fortress was largely constructed during the 12th century by the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Following the incorporation of Provence into the Kingdom of France the fort was significantly enlarged in the 17th century on the orders of King Louis XIV : becoming a key element in the defence of Marseille and the Mediterranean coast.
The fortress is a remarkable example of military architecture spanning several centuries. Its imposing ramparts and bastions overlook both the Old Port and the open sea reflecting the evolving techniques of coastal defence from the medieval period to the age of artillery. Within its walls visitors can discover historic structures including the tower of King René and spacious courtyards that bear witness to the long and complex history of the site.
Throughout the centuries the fort Saint-Jean fulfilled many roles beyond its military function. The monument served as a garrisonand later as a strategic military installation until the twentieth century. Although parts of the fort suffered damage during the Second World War extensive restoration has preserved this exceptional monument. Since 2013 the fort Saint-Jean has formed part of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM).
